The Lovely Bones by Alice SeboldMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I can't decide between a 3.5 or 4.0 for this book, but I am leaning towards 4.0.
The protagonist and narrator, young Susie, is raped and murdered very early in the story. But fear not, since Susie is doing her narration from beyond the grave, this isn't even a minor bump in the road. This is good because otherwise the story would be too short, and you'd miss all the good stuff.
Having the deceased Susie narrate is a bit risky, but Sebold does a pretty believable job of it. There are some rather odd bits in the book, but she generally pulls them off well. (I will not mention them here so as to not give anything away.)
So, rape and murder of a young girl and the pain and difficulties that follow must make this a very depressing book. Not so much, it turns out. While there is nothing gleeful about the terrible things that happen, it still manages to be a rather hopeful and occasionally humorous book. The author has an interesting take on the "what happens after death" thing which I appreciated.

My daughter read this, and I had thought of picking it up too. Now I will. Thanks, Mike.
@Karen: I think you will like it, but the reviews are a little mixed -- clearly not everyone does.
I didn't realize you were also a critic. Hummmmmmmmm. I'll read it. With Rob in appeallate law I've read too many rape and murder cases, but I'll make an effort and read this book then give you MY critique!
Thanks for stopping by and for your support. I'm going to be fine. Just need time to heal.
Love you dear,
XO
P.S. Was driving back from the park a few weeks ago and a blue Porche with white stripes pulled up along side. I laughed. It didn't have a number, just white stipes. It looked good. I fished for my camera while doing 80 and couldn't locate the damn thing. I don't have a photo, but it really happened.
Hi Karen!
@Suze: I am a natural in the critic department. If I don't have an opinion, I'll make one up. LOL.
If you want something to read and this works for you, go for it. I have several books I recommend more highly. In particular you (and Karen) would probably love "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle."
We read this book at book club.
I liked it. A good read.
I am once again reading The Beach by Alex Garland. Very disturbing. A modern version of Lord of the Flies.
@Linda: Thanks for stopping by!
I am currently reading "The Glass Castle" and "Angels and Demons." The former is a better piece of writing than in latter IMnsHO.
Hi Mike, how is your reading going?
Doh! Things have gotten so crazy that I have not even kept my Goodreads account up-to-date.
Thanks for the poke Ms Linda!
For the moment I will only say that straight guys should not read Outlander. (Horny women on the other hand would probably enjoy it.)
Thanks for the review!
Planning on reading as soon as humanly possible then seeing the movie shortly after - I have a think for Marky Mark ;)
Also, I love your profile picture! I'm a crazy cat lady and have hand fed many critters! So sweet!
i read this book years ago and really liked it, but it did make me feel very depressed and sad. i'd reccomend it though. i'm kinda leery about the movie that's coming out..the preview makes it look weird...
@Kari: Thanks for stopping by. The little critter in the current pic is Storm at 3 weeks old. I was fostering her and some other kittens until they were old enough to adopt out after my furry buddy of 19 years passed away. Storm and a black cat (Pantera) got to stay with me long-term. :)
@Merri: I almost never watch the movies of books I have read due to my usually being disappointed when I do. I expect I will skip this one as well.
Baby, I forgot to wish you Happy Holidays. Sorry about that. Happy Holidays! I'm going to Amazon "The Story of..." I'll let you know what I think.
I have a writer friend I'd like you to meet. She has a writer's club and you might enjoy it. I'll introduce the two of you if you like. Yes, she's published. She's also a very famous entertainment writer. Writes for Rolling Stone, etc. She's a family friend and an absolute hoot!!! I think you'd love her and her friends. Why she invited me to join, I have no damn clue!!! I'm an artist!!! Let me know, okay? Love you dear. XO
@Suze: Sorry, I have been without 'Net connectivity for a while. I very much appreciate your kind wishes and would be happy to meet your writer friend. I will respond further in e-mail.
I still haven't responded via email. I'm as bad as you! And as soon as I can get to the bookstore or Amazon, I'm buying OUTLANDER!!!! HA!!! I'll just read the "good" parts! I think Karen should too. ;) We'll give you our review. And just so you know, I read your comment at the Wild Onion. Very funny young man. You're a bad boy. *Suze is observed searching for just the right photo!* XO
